Stefan Szczesny & Avignon
Avignon, and more specifically the Palais des Papes in Avignon, is the venue of Stefan Szczesny’s most important exhibition to date. Entitled Métamorphoses méditerranéennes, the exhibition provides a major retrospective of Szczesny’s work, focusing in particular on its Mediterranean character in terms of both motifs and stylistic affiliation. Also one of the largest to have been hosted in the Palais des Papes, the exhibition begins with a large stainless steel sculpture (the ‘Tree of Life’) in the Palais’ cloisters, then to continue with canvasses from different periods in the cloisters’ upper gallery and the Palais’ two main halls, the ‘Grand Tinel’ and the Grand Chapel (where a selection of recent paintings is supplemented by large ceramics). In addition, a selection of Szczesny’s shadow sculptures is shown in various places in the city.
